Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy is now LIVE!

The 5th Title in the Series

Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy

Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy

It’s official!  Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy went live on Amazon April 8th.  This one is thuper thpecial 😉  My granddaughter cracks me up and her voice is so cute right now.  She’s 3 and has trouble saying certain things.  Last summer we went through what we like to call, “the great frinkle cheese debate”.  She said “f”s for “s”s so sprinkle cheese (grated parmesan) always came out “frinkle” cheese (refer to a previous post).

Making Story Lines Easy

Audrey goofball

Audrey being Audrey

Here’s the goofball now ^

I had to figure out how to get this funny memory into a story line so the “mithing” tooth was the answer.  I must say, I am really proud of this one.  Even though I add something personal to each one of my books, this one is extra meaningful.  I am truly blessed to be able to put these special family moments into a book.  No one else knows the inside jokes but my family does!

Making a Difference!

There’s been so much going on lately!

On February 18th, I spoke to Mrs. Taylor’s 6th grade class at my alma mater.  When I was in grade school, this was a 3rd grade classroom.  I spoke to the students about writing and publishing and they could not have been a better audience.  They listened well and asked intelligent questions.

After I left, they researched websites for kids’ publishing.  Mrs. Taylor took advantage of their excitement and made a decision to throw her lesson plans out the window and go with it.  They found exactly what they needed and got busy.  Their project was to write and publish their own book and that’s what they did!

Hearing that made me feel so good…it was like I really made a difference by sharing my passion.  My niece and nephew happened to be in the class and when their books came in the mail, they ran to my house (literally, they only live two blocks from me) to show me their books.  My nephew even dedicated his to me.  Talk about exciting!!

Being an author is so much more than coming up with a story, it’s about sharing my love for books, reading, and writing…oh, and doxies!  Don’t forget, I LOVE doxies (and German Shepherds, and Schnauzers, and mutts, and so on, and so on).

Peanut the intellect.

The Author Life

Things are really kicking into high gear.  Almost everyday I’m getting events lined up, emails requesting I attend an event or speak to a class, and today I received an email from Barnes & Noble inviting me to be involved in an author event/book signing at their store!

Long Term Memory

I was asked to read/speak to students at the school I attended in kindergarten and first grade.  That will be a treat. One memory I have from that school (and you aren’t going to believe this) was having mats and nap time.  We all had name stickers with animals on them.  Mine was a dachshund!  True story.  I’ve also read at libraries and classrooms and have met some great kids!

I am truly living out my dream and look forward to what the future holds.  See my events page for my upcoming schedule.

Sharing My Passion

I was recently asked to speak to the 6th grade class where I went to school.  I talked to the kids about books, reading, writing, & publishing.  I got so into how & why I started writing that I forgot to tell them that I went to that same school!

I didn’t mention that I loathed grade school.  I had my reasons.  I went kicking and screaming (literally) every morning until I reached junior high when I finally realized that school was pretty much mandatory and I may as well suck it up.  My siblings like to remind me of the fence clinging, car door knob clinging, and kitchen cabinet clinging (my poor dad).  This was my morning ritual.  I’ll bet my parents loved the summer months.  I wanted to appear as cool as possible in front of my “crowd” so I failed to bring up those memories.

Making a Difference

On a good note, they seemed really excited to learn that anyone can get a book published if they know the steps to take.  They came up with great questions and did research on kid’s publishing after I left.

It’s nice to pay it forward and see a spark of passion in these great kids.  I hope the thrill of writing continues for these students and maybe someday at least one of them can be in the position I am in…living my dream of seeing my books on Amazon!

Book #5…Making It Personal.

The Flip n Flide

The Flip n Flide

Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy

Just like with my other books, Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy was born from a personal experience.

Let’s just say that some letters are more challenging for toddlers to say than others.  For my granddaughter, her “s”s were replaced with “f”s for a period of time.

The Great Frinkle Cheese Debate

Over and over we would have, what we liked to call, “the great frinkle cheese debate”.  Both grandkids called grated parmesan cheese “sprinkle cheese”, so for awhile when Audrey said it, it became “frinkle” cheese.

She would ask for the “frinkle” cheese, I would say, “here’s your frinkle cheese”.  She would say, “it NOT frinkle cheese grandma”.  I would say, “then what is it”?  She would say, “it FRINkle cheese”.

Never argue with a three year old.  It never turns out well.  Because this predicament took place in the summer, outdoor activities also became an entertaining experience.  Well, to everyone but Audrey it seems.  The slip n’ slide became a flip n’ flide.

There was no way this situation would not become an adventure for Whiskers, Wags, & Sniffy so Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy was born from many sleepless nights putting together the ingredients for book number 6.

The illustrator and I are in the process of perfecting the images for the next book, then on to editing the text, formatting, and finally publishing!

What’s Next for Whiskers, Wags, & Sniffy?

Book # 6 is already in the planning stages.  This one was a suggestion from some southern friends of ours.  For now, the theme of this book shall remain a secret to be revealed in the future…………..

Hardcovers are Here

For the first time ever, the Doxie Tale Adventure books will be available in hard copy (with the exception of A Super Fun Day).  I am so stoked about this, what an awesome sight to see when this baby came in the mail!  Next week, I will have my author copy of Undercover Doxies & Santa’s Super Sleepover in the hard cover version as well.  Look out libraries and book stores, I hope you’ll be clammering to get your hands on these bad boys!!

Is It Finally Time??

I don’t know who misses our little black & tan Peanut more…us or Abby.  When we lost her (October 27, 2014), Abby was lost for awhile and we were devastated.  She was 5 days away from her 13th birthday and had the greatest personality.

Abby’s always been such a mommy’s girl though, I’m not sure whether she is lonely or enjoying having all the attention.  I’ve been back & forth so many times about getting her a companion or two.  She’s 13 now and doesn’t really like other dogs but I know she would get used to another one.

While I know there’s not another dog that will ever take Peanut’s place in our hearts, I think it’s time to rescue a dog or two and give them the best home ever.  We’re on some rescue lists so hopefully Abby’s new pal/pals will come along soon.  Wish us luck!

Santa’s Super Sleepover was a hit!

I love signing my books at hometown events.  People came from all over to shop and support local.  Lots of people took advantage of getting my latest book for their collection.  It’s always so nice visiting with people.  Some I hadn’t seen since retiring from my Postmaster job (almost 2 years ago)!  Being so visible in the community for the last 15 years made leaving pretty tough so I’m thankful for these events that allow me to catch up with old friends.

Last year at this same event, several people asked me if I had a Christmas book out so I decided I should write one to have available this year.  Since no child ever actually sees Santa on Christmas Eve, I decided to come up with a way for Whiskers, Wags, and Sniffy to live the dream!

If you haven’t picked up a copy of Santa’s Super Sleepover yet, please do.  It’s a fun, quick read for the little ones in your life.  It will soon become that classic story you read each year on Christmas Eve!

What’s up next for Doxie Tale Adventures??  Sniffy Meets the Tooth Fairy happens to be in the hands of the illustrator as we speak.  This book holds special meaning (as they all do) and was inspired by my beautiful granddaughter who never ceases to crack me up.   She’s only 3 so the antics have only just begun!

Abby had a great time visiting with Santa this past weekend.  She was such a good girl wearing the hat she hates.  I guess she figured she’d better be on her best behavior 😉   How fitting that Santa’s Super Sleepover is available on Amazon now!  We’re getting ready to promote this and the other books in the series and excited for the first Christmas “tail”.  When my kids were little, one of my favorite things to do was take them to the bookstore to pick out a Christmas book.  I still can’t believe that I have my own books that kids can choose from.  I hope they enjoy reading them as much as I’ve enjoyed writing them.  Until next time………

READ ALL ABOUT IT…..Old dog learns new tricks!!

Just three more days until the Monticellobration in downtown Monticello, IL!!  This was my booth last year, with a mere 2 titles to offer.  That was my output for 2014.  This year, I worked on my 3rd book, Undercover Doxies, and the first ever Christmas book in the series, Santa’s Super Sleepover.  I hope to see lots of old and new faces this year as I try to bring awareness to my series.

I have learned so much since beginning this journey and one thing for sure is that the hard work starts AFTER your books are published.  Being such a small fish (like a guppy for instance) in an ocean full of authors and children’s books takes endless effort to try to stand out.

I set a goal when I created my Doxie Tale Adventure facebook page of reaching 1000 likes by the first year.  I started my page Memorial Weekend of 2014 and by April of 2015 I had reached my goal.  I joined doxie loving groups, children’s book groups, and author groups to brand myself.

Something I’ve learned in this whole process is that I love marketing!  Who knew?!?  My website is still under construction as I have so much more to learn but hang with me and I hope to continue to make improvements to make it more professional looking.  Bear with me, I’m old!

Like my LinkedIn summary says, “Maybe you CAN teach an old dog new tricks”.

OK…I’m not THAT old.  This was my favorite Halloween costume many years ago.  Note the handkerchief tucked into my watch, a trick I picked up from watching Dennis the Menace (a Mrs. Wilson thing).
